Locating Ourselves & Orienting In this Moment
Where are we? We are in the threshold of Winter: The daylight is shorter in the Northern hemisphere, the sun moves just barely above the horizon during the day, and the ground is soaking from the cold rains. This is a moment of darkness in this land. However, in this darkness there is infinite movement, energy, and purpose.
There are forces of recycling nutrients, decomposing what is no longer needed, and going into an almost invisible rhythm of microscopic worlds reconstructing the structure of the ground; freezing-thawing, wet-and-dry cycles, setting the stage for a new growing season.
We are in the threshold of political and social systems showing us once again how the humanity of a few is seen as more valuable than others. We are in the wintering of these systems, and in the repurposing of nourishment, found in our everyday lives of resilient communities around the world.
There is also a moment to pause and rest in this darkness, of falling to the ground. And we can do this in community, by locating ourselves through our senses and witnessing each other, and orienting and reorienting again to our commitment for each other.
I want to offer a practice to locate ourselves with our 5 senses and beyond, no matter where we are, or what’s to come, we can come back to our body and each other.
5 things I can see:
- people coming together
- the land under my feet
- the young honoring ancestors
- my family next to me
- the colors of the season
4 things I can touch:
- the hands of those working tirelessly
- the rain on my face
- the fabric of waving flags of liberation
- the fur of my dog
3 things I can hear:
- the voice of my love ones
- the chants in the streets
- the birds that still exist
2 things I can smell:
- the scent of my plant family
- the ceremonial palo santo
1 thing I can taste
- the feast that we will harvest and share
Locate yourself through your senses in your community. Orient yourself for exploration of what’s possible and needed.
